Congress general secretary Digivijaya Singh today slammed the Mayawati government for its “failure to work for the Dalits” and alleged that the chief minister and her relatives were making money from government funds rather than helping the community.

“Has the time come to discuss whether the creamy layer among Dalits should be separated from the rest?” Singh asked a gathering of Dalit workers at a convention in Lucknow. The gathering was organised by Raghvendra Ram,convenor of the Dalit Mahasangh.

The programme was also addressed by other senior Congress leaders, including state president Rita Bahuguna Joshi and national SC commission chairman P L Punia. Singh described Mayawati as “Daulat ki beti rather than Dalit ki beti” and claimed that the community was moving towards the Congress following the efforts of Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi. He said,“While Dalits in Badalpur,i.e.,Mayawati’s native place, are living in pathetic conditions,Mayawati has developed a 100-acre farm for herself and her family in the area.” He assured the gathering that party would stand by Dalits and the poor .
