Cong leader in dock for ‘sheltering’ wanted man

UP police has filed a chargesheet against Bhagwan Singh Shakya,former MLA and Congress leader from Badaun,for allegedly providing shelter to a criminal Harish alias Paharia who carried a reward of Rs 15,000 on his head.

The Badaun police claimed they had arrested Harish,wanted for the kidnapping and murder of a local businessman’s son,from Shakya’s residence in Shivpuram area in Badaun in January.

“We have charge-sheeted Bhagwan Singh Shakya under Section 216 of the IPC,” Badaun SSP Manzil Saini said.

Shakya,who joined the Congress in October last year after leaving the BSP,said the police had fabricated the case.

“A meeting was on at my residence and 400 party workers were present. Harish ran into my house after jumping from the police van. The police came after him and caught him. Later,I came to know that the police filed a case against me for providing shelter to the accused,” said Shakya.

Prashant Saini,son of businessman Arjun,was kidnapped from Civil Lines area of Badaun on October 28 last year. The police arrested five persons,including a woman,for the kidnapping. On information provided by one of the accused,the police recovered Prashant’s body,which was buried in thickets in Shekhupur area. Harish,who was found to be the kingpin,remained absconding.
