The admissions for post-graduate courses in Allahabad University through post-graduate admission test (PGAT) have come to a stop after it was pointed out by an aspirant that the cut-off for OBC category cannot go 10 per cent lower than that of the general category students. The norm, which was set by a Supreme Court order in 2008,was not being followed in the admissions in the University. Meanwhile, the University authorities are yet to take a call on how to proceed with the admission process.
Realising non-adherence to the 2008 order of the Supreme Court,an aspirant for admission in MA (Hindi) wrote a letter to the head of department referring to it.
The order maintained the cut-off for OBC candidates should at most be 10 per cent less than that of the general candidates for maintaining academic standard. The matter then reached the director,PGAT,Prof C K Dwivedi.
Prof Dwivedi conceded the norm was not being followed in the the last few years and wrote to all department heads concerned about the matter. There are nearly 1,400 PG seats in AU. Subsequently, the admission process was stopped two days after it began on July 21. Since then, there is no development on the issue.
While sources claimed the vice-chancellor was seeking legal opinion on the matter,Prof Dwivedi said he was yet to meet the V-C on the matter.
I never asked in any written order or letter that the admission process be stopped. A point was brought up by an aspirant and I included that in the letter written to the department heads by way of advice, said Prof Dwivedi.
The Registrar of AU,Prof J N Mishra, when contacted, said Prof Dwivedi would be in the best position to explain what is happening on the matter.
However,Prof Dwivedi said he has been trying to meet the VC on the issue and clarify the nature of his letter.
I waited for the V-C till evening today. I hope to meet him tomorrow. I really do not know where the problem is, he said.
