Close shave for passengers as train coaches decouple

Nobody was injured, although some passengers fell inside the train due to the sudden jerk.

Hundreds of passengers aboard 11094 Varanasi-Mumbai Mahanagri Express had a providential escape when 18 coaches of the train decoupled from another six between Karchhana and Cheoki railway stations in Allahabad, a senior rail official said Tuesday. Nobody sustained injuries, he added.

According to North Central Railway (NCR) Zone officials, the incident occurred Monday afternoon after the train had left Karchhana station (Allahabad) around 4 pm.

“The coupling between three-tier sleeper coach S-2 and S-3 broke after the train had crossed some distance from Karchchana. The train driver and the guard immediately informed the control room, following which movement of trains on the particular line was stopped. The engine and the six coaches were stopped at some distance from where the decoupling took place, while the remaining 18 coaches came to a stop on their own,” said a NCR spokesperson.

He said that the engine with the six coaches was taken to Cheoki, while another engine was called in to pull the remaining coaches.

Further, the S-2 coach, whose decoupling apparatus had completely broken, had to be replaced by another three-tier sleeper coach. The train proceeded on its onward journey around 7 pm, following which the traffic was resumed on the Allahabad-Mumbai line.

Nobody was injured, although some passengers fell inside the train due to the sudden jerk.  “The mechanical division will carry out an inquiry into the matter and the authorities at Varanasi will be informed, because the train originates from there,” said the spokesperson.
