The charred body of a 20-year-old youth recovered from Gwaltoli area in Kanpur on Friday morning may be that of Zia-ud-din alias Ali,who was kidnapped on November 5,according to the the police.
We cannot rule out the possibility of the body being that of Ali. The height and age group of Ali matches with that of the body recovered from Gwaltoli, said B P Jogdand,Deputy Inspector General,Kanpur.
The body has been sent for a postmortem and we will call the family members on Saturday for identification, the DIG added.
In case there is still some ambiguity regarding the identity, the police could also opt for a DNA test, the DIG said. Four persons Kamal,Arvind,Babblo and Tannu who were arrested on November 9 on charges of kidnapping Ali had confessed to have killed him.
They also admitted to throwing Alis body on the Lucknow-Kanpur highway road under the Ajgain police station.
Circle Officer,Govind Nagar,Prashant Kumar said,For the last four days,we have been making efforts to trace Alis body at Ajgain and in the Sai river.
Hinting at the involvement of more people in the case, the officer said: Possibilities are that Alis body was burnt and thereafter thrown in Gwaltoli.
Adding that the four had confessed to the murder,Kumar said: Even as the arrested men admitted that they had hidden the body in Ajgain,it was surprising that it could not be traced. We recovered the knife and the clothes.
The Circle Officer of Colenlganj,Shoaib Iqbal, meanwhile, said the unidentified person had been murdered somewhere else and his body was thrown in the Gwaltoli area.
We have searched the adjoining areas and it is certain that the man was not killed in the Gwaltoli area. Locals present at the spot till late night denied having any information about the incident, he added.
