Camp for special athletes begins

A week-long national level coaching camp for special athletes was formally inaugurated on Sunday evening at AMC Stadium,Lucknow Cantonment.

A week-long national level coaching camp for special athletes was formally inaugurated on Sunday evening at AMC Stadium,Lucknow Cantonment. An impressive march past and colourful cultural programmes were the highlight of the inaugural function. About 300 mentally challenged athletes are taking part in the camp which has been organised by Special Olympics Bharat,UP. The Sports Authority of India is supporting the initiative.

Athletes and coaches from Punjab,Gujarat,Madhya Pradesh,Rajasthan,Haryana,Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh will receive training from national level coaches till September 9 in various athletic events.

Programme director for central and northern states,Dr. Amitav Mishra informed that special athletes from India brought home more than 50 gold medals from Special Olympics World Summer Games held at China in 2007 and Special Olympics World Winter Games at USA in 2009. “Special Olympics Uttar Pradesh organises both competitions and coaching camps in different parts of the state. This time the Lucknow event shall also train some of the probable athletes for the upcoming Special Olympics World Summer Games to be held at Athens,Greece in June-July 2011,” he added.

Ajay,Preeti win
Ajay Rathore emerged winner in the 12.5 km long inter-college cross country race organised by Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University,Kanpur. Preeti emerged winner in the women’s section.

The cross country race in the women’s section was 5 km long.

Ram Asrey,Garima Chaudhary to participate in world judo c’ships
UP judokas Ram Asrey Yadav (Varanasi) and Garima Chaudhary (Meerut) will be representing India in the World Judo Championships to be held at Tokyo,Japan from September 9. President UP Judo Association (UPJA) KL Gupta informs that Ram Asrey Yadav had won a silver medal in the Asian Judo Championship 2009 while Garima Chaudhary had won golds at the SAF Games and the Commonwealth Judo Championships. Secretary UPJA and international judo referee Munawar Anzar has been nominated by the International Judo Federation for officiating in the world championship.
