BSP fields Prakash Rawat for Rajya Sabha by-election

The ruling Bahujan Samaj Party has fielded Jai Prakash Rawat as its nominee for the by-election to the the Rajya Sabha.

The ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has fielded Jai Prakash Rawat as its nominee for the by-election to the the Rajya Sabha.

The by-election to the seat was necessitated after former BSP leader Balihari Babu tendered his resignation. Balihari was expelled from the BSP recently. Balihari’s term in the Rajya Sabha was to expire on April 2,2012.

Rawat,who joined the BSP during the trust vote over the nuclear deal,was a Samajwadi Party parliamentarian from Mohanlaganj in the last Lok Sabha. He had represented the Hardoi Parliament seat for three terms. He was also associated with the Loktantrik Congress Party in the past.

Rawat filed his nomination papers on Thursday — last date for filing the papers — and he is the only candidate in the fray. Sources in the office of the State’s Chief Election Officer (CEO) said the elected candidate would be declared after the last date of withdrawal — August 3.

Rawat’s father,Jagannath Prasad,was the deputy chairman of the state Assembly from May 13,1978 to February 17,1980,according to a release issued by the BSP.   

“Whatever responsibility the chief minister assigned to me,I would diligently deliver them,” he said.

His wife,Jyoti Rawat,is the chairperson of the Zila Panchayat,Hardoi. Rawat had completed his graduation from Lucknow University in 1979.
