Even as it hopes to reap electoral benefits from riots-torn western UP in the Lok Sabha elections, the opposition BJP’s core organisational activities have taken a major hit in Muzaffarnagar and adjoining districts — a major source of funds for the party.

As soon as he was appointed BJP general secretary in-charge of UP,Amit Shah had called for creating a corpus fund of Rs 50 crore and setting up of 10-member committees at every polling booth by September 30. The district units were told to collect a minimum of Rs 1,000 from each booth for the corpus, which was to be put in bank as fixed deposits. The interest generated was to be used for party activities.

“Both fund collection and putting the money in banks have completely stopped in the riot-affected Muzaffarnagar,Shamli,Baghpat and Meerut districts. The deadlines for these works ended today. Riots have affected the party’s programmes in Saharanpur district as well,” said a party leader from the area. He said the party used to get maximum funds from western UP.

BJP national secretary and state co-incharge,Rameshwar Chaurasiya, too, confirmed that riots have affected party’s organisational activities.

There are 1,700 polling booths in Muzaffarnagar but BJP committees have been formed at less than 1,000 booths so far, sources said.”

“The fund collection stopped after the riots broke out. We had received coupons for donations of Rs 50 to Rs 5,000 on August 22 but communal disturbance erupted in Muzaffarnagar on August 27,” said a party leader from the district.

In Shamli, only 650 booth level committees were been formed against the target of 819. “Not a single rupee has been received from Shamli for corpus fund as Section 144 was imposed soon after riots broke out,” said a party leader.

In Baghpat, too, booth committees could be formed at only 600 of 831 polling booths and fund collection was stopped in the wake of the communal clashes.

The organisational activities have also been affected in Saharanpur Mahanagar and Saharanpur District (rural). In Saharanpur rural, only 60 per cent committees have been formed against 2,218 booths although the exercise began in July.

‘Govt ferried riot accused in state plane to meet CM’ <\b>

Calling the SP government’s action in Muzaffarnagar riots as “biased”,the BJP Monday alleged that a person against whom a case of rioting is lodged in Muzaffarnagar’s Jansath police station on September 3 was ferried to Lucknow in a state plane to meet Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav Saturday as part of a delegation of “peace ambassadors”.

Addressing a news conference,BJP state president Laxmikant Bajpai identified the man as Maulana Nazeer, who,he said, was photographed by journalists at the Meerut airstrip when he alighted from the state plane.

Accusing the state government of “partiality” in acting against those involved in riots,Bajpai said it is clear what message the government is trying to give by branding a riot accused as an “ambassador of peace”.

Bajpai said Nazeer runs a madrasa in Jansath.

The BJP leader also demanded that cases of Muzaffarnagar riots be investigated either by the CBI or an investigation team led by a HC judge.
