The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday took out a march in the city and staged dharna at Shakti Bhawan to protest against the hike in electricity tariff.
After a meeting with Power Department officials,BJP state president Laxmikant Bajpai announced to intensify the agitation and move the court as well as Central Electricity Regularity Commission against the tariff hike.
Led by Bajpai,a delegation of party leaders met the UP Power Corporation Limited managing director A P Mishra at Shakti Bhawan and sought to know the reasons behind the hike. Bajpai alleged corruption in the power corporation and said that the department was facing losses due to power theft.
Bajpai said the state government should not raise the power tariff when it cannot ensure a minimum 10-hours of supply across the state.
He appealed to the public not to pay the electricity bills in protest of the tariff hike. Party workers staged similar protests in different districts of the state too.
Rashtriya Lok Dal has would also stage demonstrations in all the districts on June 6 to protest against the hike in power tariff. Party state president Munna Singh Chauhan said that the decision of hike in tariff for rural consumers reflects Samajwadi Party is anti-farmer.
