BJPs legislature party leader in Vidhan Sabha Hukum Singh,MLA Suresh Rana and other party workers were lathicharged by police while they were demonstrating in Shamli district today. The leaders were demanding the arrest of those responsible for the gangrape of a girl on Saturday night.
The protest came at a time when the administration had imposed restrictions on gatherings in Shamli city after minor clashes between two communities were reported in the area.
Rana said they sat on a dharna at Subhash Chowk. I met police officials on Sunday and they promised to take action in the case. However,no action was taken, he said.
While they were protesting,a police team led by SP Abdul Hameed lathi-charged them,Rana said. Many workers including Singh and himself were injured,Rana said.
DM P K Singh said that Section 144 of the CrPC,prohibiting the assembly of people,had been imposed in Shamli city since afternoon after minor clashes with a communal tinge were reported.
D C Mishra,DIG (Saharanpur range),said the BJP leaders were dispersed as assembly of more than 10 persons was prohibited. They were detained for a while and released.
Mishra said an FIR had been lodged against five persons on the complaint of the girl,who was gangraped while travelling from Haridwar to Jind in Haryana. One Bholu has been arrested.
State BJP president Laxmikant Bajpai said IG,Meerut zone,Bhawesh Kumar Singh had assured him of action in two days.
