Bareilly teams exercised domination in Sepak Takraw on day-one of the 7th UP State Games which commenced at KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium,Lucknow on Saturday.
In the men’s section sepak takraw group stage matches,STC Bareilly defeated Kanpur by 2-0; Bareilly defeated Faizabad by 2-0 while Allahabad beat Bijnore by 2-0. In the women’s section,Bareilly beat Gorakhpur by 2-0 while Faizabad defeated Kanpur by 2-0.
In netball,Ghaziabad defeated Allahabad by 21-1 points while Gautam Budh Nagar beat Lucknow by 20-10 in the boys’ section. In the girls’ section,Ghaziabad beat Lakhimpur Khiri by 32-5 while Gautam Budh Nagar beat Bareilly by 19-13. Five players representing the Ghaziabad team including its captain Prachi Tehlan,vice-captain Manisha,Megha Chaudhary,Neha,Indu Pawar were all a part of the India team for the Commonwealth Games.
The State Games were inaugurated by Uttar Pradesh Olympic Association (UPOA) president Dr. Akhilesh Das. Asian Games gold medallists Sudha Singh and Commonwealth Games silver medallist Soniya Chanu also graced the occasion. Both were given mementoes and Rs 25,000 each by the UPOA president.
Speaking during the inaugural function Das said that the state government will be rewarding gold medal winners of the upcoming National Games with Rs 3 lakh each while the silver and bronze medal winners from the state will be getting Rs 2 lakh and Rs 1 lakh each.
