In A joint operation with the Punjab Police, the state ATS arrested an operative of banned militant outfit Babbar Khalsa from Badhni Railway Station Road in Siddharth Nagar district on Saturday night.

Makhan Singh alias Dayal Singh — wanted in several cases of murder,Arms Act and Explosives Act in Punjab — was arrested while he was on way to Punjab from Nepal. He had gone there to get a passport made in Dayal Singh’s name. Telephone numbers,a cellphone and cash has been recovered from his possession.

“Makhan is a close associate of Babbar Khalsa chief Badhawa Singh alias Chacha, who is operating from Pakistan these days,” said ADG (Law and Order) Brij Lal.

Makhan was arrested following tip-offs from various sources, including Gurjant Singh — a link between militant outfit Khalistan Zindabad Force and Babbar Khalsa International. Gurjant was arrested by the UP ATS from Saharanpur on October 10.

Makhan used to work as a driver in several countries after getting a passport issued from Jalandhar in 1987. In California,he came in contact Tara Singh, who introduced him to Badhawa Singh. “Badhwa called Makhan to Lahore and gave him arms training,” said Lal.

After staying in Lahore for 12 years,Makhan, along with five others, entered India via Gurdaspur border in November 2009. They brought three AK-47s and pistols each, two hand granades and 400 cartridges for one Pal Singh in Punjab. Two AK-47s were given to Karnvir — another Babbar Khalsa operative — in May this year. Makhan and Karnvir used the arms to eliminate Mahant of Maiyyadas Dera in Punjab’s Jarpur district. Pal Singh was arrested from Amritsar in July.

Makhan and Karnvir, along with another unidentified person from western UP,later went to Kathmandu to get a passport. Due to delay in procedure,Karnvir and the unidentified person returned to Punjab. Karnvir was arrested on October 18. He,however, escaped within a few hours.

Makhan was returning to Punjab when he was arrested.
