A mob of over 4,000 pelted stones at the camp office of Auraiya superintendent of police (SP) after a businessman was shot at by a member of the other community in City Kotwali area Friday evening.

The victim,Zaheer,is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kanpur,while the accused,Dheeraj Awsthi,has been arrested,the police said.

Auraiya SP Sanjai Kakkar said Awasthi shot Zaheer around 6 pm following an altercation,after which a mob from Zaheers locality gathered at the highway and started pelting stones at Awasthis house,he said.

Later,a group of people went ahead and set the house of the accused on fire. None of Awasthis family members were present in the house.

The mob later indulged in brick-batting with the police force,which lasted for over two hours,the SP said,adding that the situation was brought under control only after police forces from adjacent districts arrived at the spot.

By the time the police reached the spot,the mob reached the SPs camp office and started pelting stones and damaged a police vehicle parked nearby.

The situation was brought under control after intervention of senior members of the community. Police force has been deployed,said Kanpur Range DIG RK Chaturvedi.
