AU student shot during clash

A 20-year-old Allahabad University (AU) student was shot and two policemen sustained pellet injuries following violent clashes

A 20-year-old Allahabad University (AU) student was shot and two policemen sustained pellet injuries following violent clashes between two groups late Friday night. A student was arrested from the spot with countrymade pistol and cartridges. Police said he was not involved in the killing.

Police said Atul Singh,a student of C M P Degree College,who was contesting for the president’s post of the College’s student union,hosted a birthday party at Achhey Lodge Friday night. In a bid to showcase his strength,Atul invited students from AU hostels.

An argument ensued between residents and hostel inmates,in which Alok Katare,a BA (Part-III) student in AU,from KPUC Hostel,was beaten up. Katare informed his friends in the hostel of the incident.

Around midnight,around 40 students from KPUC Hostel,moved towards Achhey Lodge and hurled bombs.

“By the time police arrived,Alok had suffered three gunshot injuries. He was rushed to Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital,where he was declared dead,” said SSP Umesh Kumar Srivastava.

Constables Mukesh and Vikas sustained pellet injuries. “We have arrested Vijay with a country-made pistol and 10 cartridges. Five others were also detained. They were part of the group supporting Katare. Raids are being conducted in Achhey Lodge and the identity of the killers have been ascertained,” Srivastava added.
