Attack on engineer: Contractor held

Police have arrested one person in connection with the attack on engineer,who was shot at by unidentified assailants inside his office in Varanasi’s Cantonment area on April 26.

Police have arrested one person in connection with the attack on engineer,who was shot at by unidentified assailants inside his office in Varanasi’s Cantonment area on April 26.

Upendra Nath Singh,who is a contractor,was arrested near Muhgalsarai railway station following a tip off. His wife is a Block Pramukh in Varanasi.

“The engineer,V K Singh,was not giving contracts of construction projects to Upendra and so he decided to eliminate him,” said Vinod Kumar Mishra,SHO,Cantonment Police Station. “Upendra provided weapon to one Rajesh Dubey alias Tunnu to kill the engineer,” he added.

According to police,efforts are on to arrest Rajesh Dubey,who is a notorious criminal in Ghazipur district. The vicitim,who is a junior engineer in UP Rajkiya Nirman Nigam (UPRNN),had received a threat call from Dubey three days before the attack. Dubey had allegedly demanded Rs 5 lakh from the engineer,who had reported the matter to the police and also provided them with two mobile phone numbers from which he had received the threat calls.

Two other contractors —Veer Bahadur and Mukul Singh — were also injured in the incident. While the contractors have been released from the hospital,Singh is still on ventilator at a hospital in New Delhi. His condition is reported to be stable.
