Armed with rods, mob frees man from lock-up

The police caught hold of Mukim while others managed to escape.

A mob armed with sticks and rods in Azamgarh Sunday freed a man from police custody after he had been arrested for allegedly trying to cut down prohibited trees.

The police have now charged the accused, Mukim, under Section 224 of the IPC (escape from police custody) besides the already imposed section under the Wildlife Protection Act.

Station Officer, Gambhirpur police station, Anil Prakash Singh had received information that some people were cutting down sheesham and mango trees in Magrawan village (law prohibits their felling without the permission of the Collector in writing). The police caught hold of Mukim while others managed to escape. The SO said that Mukim was booked under the relevant sections and was supposed to be released on personal bond.

“Some time in the evening, a mob of around 200 locals, armed with sticks and rods, arrived at the police station. They outnumbered the police and were able to free Mukim from the lock-up,” Singh said, adding the mob, which had come on motorcycles and SUVs, was led by one Hashim.

“Mukim, who does have a previous criminal record, now has been named as the accused in two cases. He is still absconding,” the SO said.
