Actress playing village terror on TV upholds good cause

Actress Meghna Malik, who has done a number of TV shows, films and plays,is celebrating her success as ‘Ammaji’ in Na Aana is Des…Laado on Colours.

In Lucknow to promote the show,Meghna shared her views on why serials on real issues are high on TRP.

“Subjects revolving around family politics cannot sustain audience interest for long. People associate themselves with the developments around them and want us to play their role,” says Meghna, who plays Ammaji,a character which favours female foeticide.

Terming Laado as a welcome break from the other prime time offerings,Meghna says though the issue it deals with is ugly and bitter, the intention is to generate awareness.

“Laado exposes what’s going on in the interiors of our country where women are ill-treated and girls are killed ruthlessly in the hope of a son,” says Meghna whose costume reminds of Shabana Azmi of Godmother.

“The costume is similar to that character’s but the subject is absolutely different from Godmother,” says Meghna,an NSD pass out. Last seen in Taare Zameen Par as Darsheel’s teacher,Meghna is concentrating on this particular role. “I have offers for films and serials, but I am taking my time to sign the dotted line,” she says, admitting that Ammaji is the kind of role she had been longing for.

“Though I have played important characters in serials like Radha ki Betiyaan… and Astitva, this one is different,” she claims. She reminisces her first visit to Lucknow. “That was as a theatre artiste, for a role in play Qaid-e-Hayat,in 2004,” she recollects.

Natasha Sharma, who plays the progressive thinker Sia and struggles to expose Ammaji and her oppressive ways in the serial,is a newcomer.

“I am lucky to be playing such a powerful character,” says Natasha, hoping she would get noticed. “I am concentrating on this role and not thinking about anything else,” says the Mass Communication grad from Miranda House.
