With the arrest of a student and a laboratory technician, the Agra police on Tuesday claimed to have solved the murder of 27-year-old researcher Neha Sharma, whose body was found in the laboratory of Dayal Bagh Educational Institute on March 15.
Uday Swaroop,21,a final year student of B.Sc at the institute, and 35-year-old Yashveer Singh Sandhu,a laboratory technician, were both arrested in connection with the case, with Agra Senior Superintendent of Police Subhash Chandra Dubey claiming that the murder was not planned.
Dubey alleged that Swaroop killed the girl after attempting to rape her, while Sandhu helped him in destroying the evidence.
Both the accused were produced before a local court which sent them to judicial custody. The SSP said they would seek seven-day police remand of the accused to ascertain if any more persons were involved in the crime.
The Agra police alleged that Swaroop had been infatuated with Neha. So much so,that she had reportedly informed her family of his unusual behaviour.
On Monday, the police received a forensic report that confirmed that the blood-smeared hair strands found at the site of the murder matched the sample provided by Swaroop. The police believe the girl pulled Swaroops hair during a scuffle inside the laboratory.
Agra Circle Officer Sameer Saurabh said that Sandhu took away Nehas car from the institute campus after the murder. We have two witnesses who saw Yashveer driving the Alto car away on the day of the murder, said the CO.
Nehas body was found in the laboratory on March 15,with 12 deep cuts on different parts of the body.
The police came to know about the death after they found her abandoned car and contacted her father in Delhi on her cellphone. The police also found a sketch of a girl from the lab. The sketch had cut marks drawn all over the face and hands. Later, the police found Nehas laptop from a garbage bin near the lab.
Last month, the police released three sketches on the basis of information given by two female students of the institute. Last week, the girls father sent an application to Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and others requesting for CBI investigation.
