Varun Gandhi spent his first night in Pilibhit District Jail in an isolation ward of the jail hospital. He has a 6X8 room to himself, with an attached toilet,a ceiling fan and no cot.

He is being treated as any other undertrial prisoner, jailor Mukesh Arora told this reporter, with the court allowing him to take home-made food and wear his own clothes. “There is no TV in his room. TV is available only in the barracks,” he said.

Varun did not have the tea offered to him in jail, and preferred the coffee brought to him by his men and packaged water.

According to a source,Varun seemed uncomfortable and stuck to reading Saturday’s newspapers and a book that his mother Maneka Gandhi gave him when they met yesterday. According to the source, they had a 25-minute meeting. “Maneka was accompanied by two BJP leaders during the meeting. Later, when the time came to leave, both the leaders left the room and Maneka was alone with her son for a few minutes,” he said.

While Varun was ordered to his jail room around 7.30 pm,he could fall asleep only in the wee hours. “He woke up late in the morning on Sunday and took a stroll in the space in front of his room. He did not take tea. Later, his men brought coffee and the same was served to him,” the source said. He was given newspapers to read.

On Sunday evening,Maneka again visited the jail and spent more than half an hour with Varun. Speaking to reporters, she called the new FIRs filed on Sunday part of a political conspiracy. “These are frivolous. Varun is not a criminal. It is incorrect to register cases against him.”
