Angry mob set ablaze two UPSRTC buses and clashed with the police in Budaun district’s Gunnaur area on Tuesday. This after seven persons travelling in a tempo died in a head-on collision with a UPSRTC bus.

The erring bus driver was reportedly in an inebriated condition when the accident took place. The bus overturned after hitting the tempo. Following this,the driver fled the scene.

Budaun SSP Tarun Gauba said the incident took place around 10 am when the Delhi-bound bus hit a tempo near Sahjan Muslim village. “Six persons died on the spot,” he added. The injured were admitted to the district hospital. Among them,one was referred to the Aligarh Medical College. He died in the afternoon.

Gauba said tempo driver Sonu was not among the dead or the injured. A sub-inspector has been sent to his native place to confirm if he was undergoing treatment at any other place,he added.

After the incident,locals ransacked the bus and set it on fire. They also targetted another passing bus,engaged in brick-batting with the police when they tried to disperse the crowd. “The police had to lathicharge the rioters the check the violence,” the SSP said.
