Three days after escaping death despite being ‘run over’ by a goods train,Geeta Khilawan,22,succumbed to her injuries at the Lala Lajpat Rai (LLR) Hospital on Saturday morning. On Wednesday morning,40 rakes of a goods train had passed over Geeta at the Kanpur Central Railway Station.

Dr Siddarth Singh of the LLR Hospital, who treated Geeta, told The Indian Express: “On Friday evening,we found that Geeta had sustained multiple internal injuries. Her liver and spleen were severely damaged, and there had been a lot of internal bleeding. We removed her spleen in an emergency operation performed in the late night hours.”

According to Dr Singh,Geeta survived for nearly three hours after the operation. “Owing to her internal injuries and bleeding,we could not save her,” said Dr Singh.

Geeta had alleged that she jumped on the railway tracks after two GRP constables — Munesh Kumar and Sharif-ud-din — tried to molest her.

GRP Inspector Paramhans Mishra ,however, refuted the allegations. “During investigation,it has been found that they (cops) did not molest or make any attempt to rape Geeta,” said Mishra, adding that Geeta was not in a sound mental condition.

“She herself claimed to have made three suicide attempts in the past and had said that she came to the Kanpur Central Railway station on Wednesday morning with the intention of ending her life,” said the GRP Inspector.

“We are not aware of how and where Geeta sustained the internal injuries,” said the Inspector.

A resident of Gangapur under Bangurmau police station of district Unnao,Geeta was married to Faridabad resident Ram Khilawan four years ago and had two daughters. Last week,Geeta returned to her father’s residence after a dispute with her husband.

LLR Hospital Superintendent Dr V N Tripathi said: “No one has turned up from Geeta’s family to claim the body.”
