The state government declared 27 more districts as drought-affected on Sunday evening. With this, the total number of drought-hit districts in Uttar Pradesh has risen to 47. On July 25,Chief Secretary Atul Kumar Gupta had declared 20 districts drought-prone.
The decision to declare the districts drought-hit was taken after Chief Minister Mayawati reviewed the situation. Addressing mediapersons on Sunday,Gupta said: The parameters for declaring a district drought-hit have been relaxed in accordance to the direction of the chief minister.
The second category comprises 14 districts that have recorded 40 to 60 per cent rainfall and seen less than 40 per cent Kharif sowing,Gupta added. The districts are Banda,Mathura,Allahabad,Auraiya,Jaluan,Kanpur Nagar,Varanasi,Chandauli,Moradabad,Azamgarh,Siddarth
Nagar,Badaun,Sitapur and Firozabad. Gupta said Mayawati has ordered for the postponement of the recovery of revenue dues land and irrigation from farmers in these districts.
In all the 47 districts, relief will be provided on the same pattern. The state government is in constant touch with the district magistrates of the drought-affected areas. The Centre is also being informed about the situation every day, he added.
According to Gupta, the state government had earlier prepared a Rs 993-crore plan under the National Agriculture Development Scheme. It contained Rs 320-crore worth projects to provide immediate benefit to the people. The government, however, had received little fund from the Centre,Gupta claimed.
The clear picture of the drought situation will emerge only by July-end. The government has asked the district magistrates concerned to supply drinking water not only to the residents but also to the animals, he added.
