16-year-old set on fire ‘for resisting rape attempt’

A 16-year-old girl was allegedly set on fire after she resisted a rape attempt by three youths in Bijnore district on Friday. The victim,who sustained 90 per cent burn injuries,died during treatment at the district hospital late in the night.

The Bijnore police on Saturday arrested the main accused,Mintu. They,however,said that Mintu has so far claimed innocence.

The victim’s mother,who lodged the complaint,alleged that Mintu reached her house along with two of his friends when his daughter was alone Friday afternoon,where he attempt to rape her. She also alleged that when her daughter raised an alarm,they set her ablaze after pouring kerosene on her and escaped.

The girl had suffered over 90 per cent burns by the time the locals rescued her. She was rushed to district hospital where she succumbed.

The complainant named Mintu and two of his unidentified associates in the FIR lodged at the City Kotwali police station.

Superintendent of Police,Bijnore,Rajesh Krishna said two other accused are yet to be identified. Inspector,Kotwali police station,Rakesh Vashisht said the victim’s mother alleged in her complaint that the accused took the step to avenge her family’s decision of cancelling the marriage of the victim’s elder sister with his brother.
