Tragedy struck a construction site in Singhai area of Lakhimpur Kheri district on Tuesday when 11 workers died of electrocution after the upper part of a concrete mixer came in touch with a high tension electric wire. Two of the victims were teenagers and the labourers were working at the site of a Centrally-sponsored scheme,which is being executed by the state agencies.
Most of the victims are Dalits and have been identified as Manosi (15),Reshama (14),Arti (16),Mewa (35),Daya Ram (40),Prakash (35) Pappu (32),Jamaluddin (41),Aslam (38),Sajid (36) and Jamuna (35).
The labourers were transporting the concrete mixer from one place to another at the construction site of a colony being built under the Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme (IHSDP).
Two women Launga Devi and Lajja Devi sustained injuries in the incident and are currently undergoing treatment at the local primary health centre.
District Magistrate of Lakhimpur Sameer Verma said the project is being executed by Jal Nigam at Singhai.
The government has suspended the project manager and one junior engineer, he added.
According to the local adminstration,around 15 people used to work at the construction site,where 108 houses are to be constructed. All the labourers belong to Singhai and adjoining villages like Sanjana and Singaha, said an official.
Over the issue of minors being employed in the project work,the DM said it will become clear after the the administration receives the postmortem report.
Singhai Station House Officer Vinod Kumar said an FIR has been lodged under section 304 of the IPC against contractor Ram Pal and Jal Nigam Junior Engineer Kailash Nath,but no one has been arrested yet.
The Jal Nigam has announced that it will provide a compensation of Rs 1 lakh each to the kin of the deceased.
