Chairman of Tata Sons Cyrus Mistry on Monday said the group is not planning to leave West Bengal. We have not left West Bengal, nor are we going to do it in future, Mistry told the shareholders of Tata Global Beverages when asked about the companys plan for the state.
Later,he refused to comment to the media about the Supreme Courts observation that land should be returned to farmers in Singur. The matter is sub-judice and we do not want to discuss it at this stage, said Mistry, who chaired the meeting for the first time after becoming the Chairman of Tata Sons last year, succeeding Ratan Tata.
At the AGM,at least four shareholders raised the question of Singur. The questions touched upon things like how the company was planning to use the land or that it wanted to return the land to the state government. Last week, the Supreme Court while hearing a plea in the Singur case had snubbed the company for claiming its right over the land in Singur citing existing leasehold. The Apex court bench noted that the company had already shifted its small car factory out of Singur to Gujarat and as the a result the purpose of the land acquisition had altered.
The company will file its affidavit in the Supreme Court on August 13,when the next hearing is scheduled.
Mistry also refused to comment whether he will be meeting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Mumbai next month, when she will hold an investment meet in the city.
