Dempo coach takes a dig at Houghton, asks the clubs to stand united on the issue of releasing the players for national team

“United we stand” — this is the message from Dempo coach Armando Colaco ahead of the All India Football Federation’s (AIFF) meeting that will delve into the “Goal 2011” project. The AIFF has called a meeting of the I-League clubs on April 17 with a discussion on the project topping the agenda. The AIFF is reportedly mulling over roping in top 25 players of the country for intensive training and international exposure in the lead-up to the 2011 Asian Cup in Doha.

Mohun Bagan secretary Anjan Mitra has already said that they want the list of top 25 to be released by the AIFF before April 20 so that they can start team building for the next season. Colaco, however,is not willing to go on the warpath with the AIFF. He seeks an amicable solution instead. Asked about the proposed “Goal 2011” project,Colaco told The Indian Express: “This is as weird as it gets. I have never heard of country’s top players being not allowed to play for their clubs for such a long period for national team’s preparation. Without the top players,Federation Cup and I-League will lose colour.”

Taking a dig at the national coach Bob Houghton,he added: “Houghton is an experienced and qualified coach. He should plan something better.”

The AIFF is also mulling over suspending the Federation Cup and the I-League for the 2010-2011 season to allow a lot more preparatory camps international friendlies ahead of the Doha event. Colaco disapproved the idea saying: “This is absolutely ridiculous. The clubs have to be united to stop such moves. We have to convince the AIFF and Houghton (to think differently).”

Meanwhile,Dempo will miss Roberto Silva Beto in their I-League last round match against East Bengal at Barasat tomorrow.
