As incidents of poll violence increased in the last couple of days,a Trinamool Congress worker was today hacked to death while trying to save a party candidate in Jamuria constituency of Burdwan.
According to sources,Trinamool candidate Prabhat Chatterjee a was on a campaign trail in the morning,when he was dragged out of his car and was severely beaten up by Dinabandhu Barui,a coal mafia leader of the area,and his gang. Kabir Quazi,a local Trinamool leader tried to save Chatterjee from the attack. But,the gang,including a group of armed CPM cadres,then attacked Kabir and started beating him mercilessly. Later,Barui hit Kabir with his speeding car and fled from the spot. Prabhat and Quazi were immediately rushed to the hospital,where Kabir was declared dead on arrival. Chatterjee is in a critical condition.
After the news of the death of Quazi spread,Trinamool workers started demonstrating at different parts of the district. They also gheraoed the Jamuria police station demanding arrest of Barui,who is allegedly backed by the CPM.
Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee will visit Jamuria tomorrow and hold a protest rally. Mukul Roy,Trinamool general secretary,said: This is an organised attack on our candidate. Barui is a CPM goon and a coal mafia in the area. He was sent by senior CPM leaders to attack our candidate. We will inform the EC about the incident.
Maoists kill CPM man
Maoists killed a CPM supporter,who had quit from the party long time ago,in West Midnapore district today.
According to police sources,Gagan Mahato,a resident of Gerulia village was dragged out of a trekker in which he was traveling by armed Maoists,in the morning. He was severely beaten up before being shot,said a senior police officer.
Mahato was a life insurance agent. Earlier he was a member of the CPM,but he left the party after Maoists threatened him of dire consequences for being a CPM member. Mahato used to pay a part of his earnings as extortion money to the Maoists. However,this time he refused to pay the huge amount the Maoists had asked for, said the officer.
