CPM heavyweight Rabin Deb on Monday accused the state government of fostering violence as they are aware that people are losing confidence on them. TMC had promised the moon to the people and now they are aware that they have failed miserably in living up to the promises so they are resorting to violence to see that the Opposition is unable to carry out their peaceful programmes of making the people aware of the failure of the government, he said at a press conference at Alimuddin Street on Monday.

He said that the eastern region Sangharsh Sandesh Jatha,intended to build up a mass contact and mobilise public opinion against Congress,had to be carried out without the formal permission of the Home Secretary. He also said that the jatha started on March 1 and from the very next day CPM supporters who had participated in it had were attacked.

Cong demands all-party meet to decide panchayat poll dates

The Congress party on Monday demanded an all-party meeting to fix a date for the panchayat election in the state and that Central Reserve Police Force be deployed to ensure a fair poll.

The date for the election has not been fixed yet. Instead of fixing up a date according to the whims and fancies of the panchayat minister and secretary,there should be a meeting of representatives of all the parties and a date should be fixed in accordance with a consensus reached, Pradeep Bhattacharya,president,West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee told mediapersons at a press conference. He lashed out at the ruling TMC saying that unlike what the state thought,the election should be carried out in 3-4 days and under the vigilance of the CRPF.

Before Mamata Banerjee became the chief minister,she always demanded deployment of CRPF during elections. Why is she against it now? There are only two lakh armed forces in the state. Is it enough to take care of over 50,000 booths that would be operational during the election? he said,adding that the TMC is repeating the slogans that the CPM had once chanted about not bringing in Central forces to facilitate smooth and fair elections.

Asked if there was a probability of a TMC-Congress alliance in the panchayat election,he said,There will be no alliance with the TMC. We are strong enough and will fight alone.
