While Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday condemned alleged gangrape of a nun in Nadia district, Trinamool Congress leaders accused the BJP of “playing fire with religion”.

Party spokesperson and minister Partha Chatterjee claimed that only after the BJP came to power at the Centre that religious places are being attacked. “Religion is being brought in the forefront of politics. Ranaghat is only a part of that trend… people in Bengal will never accept it,” he said.

Another minister, Firad Hakim, said that in the name of “ghar wapsi”, the BJP was targetting minority members. “The Ranagaht attack is an assault on humanity… One feels like shooting down the culprits,” he added.

State BJP president, Rahul Sinha, however, claimed that Trinamool leaders were making such remarks to shift attention from real issues. “The Ranaghat incident is a law and order issue and has shown how police inaction have resulted in such a gruesome incident. By accusing the BJP on religious grounds, the parties — particularly TMC — is trying to shed its responsibility,” Sinha said.

Shamik Bhattacharya, the only BJP MLA in the state, said: “Park Street rape survivor Suzette Jordan’s case has exposed how the ruling government responds to such incidents. Suzette had the courage to stand up against the crime… Scores of such incidents are taking place across the state with victims not getting any justice,” he added.

The CPM, meanwhile, slammed the Trinamool for the incident. CPM state secretary Surya Kanta Mishra said: “The law and order situation has totally collapsed in the state… The most unfortunate part was that the victims of such crimes have not got justice in a single case. We have heard about fast-track courts, but those have not translated into action.”
