At least three persons were killed and four others missing following land subsidence at an open-cast coal mine of Eastern Coalfield Limited (ECL) in Raniganj in Paschim Bardhaman district.

The incident took place at ECL’s Narayan Kuri Mine.

Deputy Commissioner (Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate) SS Kuldeep said three bodies have been recovered from under the mines and sent to Asansol District Hospital for post-mortem.

BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul sat on dharna in front of Raniganj police station on Thursday demanding compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the victim.

Trinamool Congress MLA Tapas Banerjee said blamed the ECL for the deaths. “Poor people are losing their lives because of ECL’s capriciousness and Central government’s indifference,” he said. Meanwhile, CPI(M) demanded action against the contractors. “The contractors who have been given the responsibility of transportation also have a role to play. It is a complete failure of ECL,” former CPI(M) MP Banshgopal Chowdhury said.
