How would a trademark Bollywood twist ever come to your aid in the conference room, where you usually dont bat an eyelid outside the company rule book? Chances are,if you have enrolled into a dance therapy class, you wouldnt blink before an annoying boss. And professionals across the country seem to have found the perfect antidote for corporate malfunctions dance.
Dance therapy is based on the fact that the body and the mind are in a state of constant reciprocal interaction. So,when movement affects the body,it has its implications on the mind too. Dance therapy uses the physical elements of breathing, posture, gesture, weight etc to work on an individuals personality, says Mumbai-based Dilshad Patel, professional dancer and therapist, who has handled clients like Infosys,GE etc. Through movements a person is made to overcome inhibitions, improvise, take risks, and boost ones self esteem.
Dancer Priti Patel is yet to formally start corporate grooming classes, but has helped several corporate professionals groom themselves through dance. I have a media professional who comes to do movement therapy before she goes for work every alternate day. She says that the therapy helps her brace for the challenges of her work, says Patel. Dance being a very posture specific form of art,it teaches professionals to hold their body in a way that exudes confidence. It also is about expressions,so it teaches you to make eye contact in a way which tells the world that you know what you are talking about, adds Patel.
Apart from being a stress busting exercise, dance helps you trust people. There are several trust building exercises, where you lean on another person who holds you up. It helps you build relationships too,not to forget that it helps you improvise with communication, says Dilshad. Priti Savdekar joined Dilshads classes to heal a back problem. But when I came out of it,I realized I could communicate better with people. And I was more confident about making my point, she says.
