Calcutta University Vice-Chancellor Suranjan Das on Friday said that a complaint of sexual harassment lodged by a post graduate student of Ballygunge Science College against a professor has been forwarded to the university’s inquiry cell.

Das said: “We will take necessary steps against the professor if the allegation is found to be true. The inquiry committee has started a probe in this regard.”

The final-year student of marine science lodged a complaint with Governor M K Narayanan, the chancellor of the university,10 days ago.

The Governor immediately forwarded the complaint to the CU V-C,directing him to take action.

The professor has been sent on leave by the authorities.

Sources in the university said the student has alleged that the teacher had been harassing her for the past one year. He would ask her to come over to his house whenever she went to meet him in the department for any academic needs, and molested her,she further alleged in the complaint.

The professor, meanwhile, denied the allegation and said he had not received any order from the authorities regarding the charges brought against him.
