Kolkata: Rain, thunderstorms bring welcome relief, heatwave less likely to return next week

Residents of Kolkata and its adjoining areas heaved a sigh of relief on Thursday with a slight dip in temperature after reeling under a hot spell for some weeks.

Thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rain brought the mercury down in Kolkata on Thursday afternoon. While the Met Department has predicted a gradual rise in temperature from Friday, it said that the possibility of another heatwave in the next five days is nearly zero.

“There is a possibility of a scattered thunderstorm in parts of North Bengal and South Bengal. The intensity of the thunderstorm on Friday will be slightly less and the activity of thunderstorms will again increase from the day after tomorrow,” a Met official said.

“There would be a gradual rise of 1 to 2 degrees Celsius temperature in the next three days, resulting in an increase in discomfort. The northwesterly wind is slowly gaining strength, resulting in a rise in the temperature.

As moisture is present, there will be increased humidity along with the rise in temperature,” added the official from the IMD.

“After three days, there will be no significant change. There will be no chance of a heat wave in the coming five days,” the official added.

“In the last 24 hours, there have been thunderstorm activities but not in all areas… The more it gets spread, the more will be its impact. The temperature will not be surging rapidly, it will fluctuate. The temperature will not turn into a heat wave-like situation,” said HR Biswas, Director, India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bhubaneshwar
