Till about half-an-hour before Rahmanishq was to begin,it seemed the AR Rahman concert at the Salt Lake Stadium would be a complete washout.
The rain thankfully subsided. As the downpour reduced to a drizzle, the Mozart of Madras took to the stage and began his performance with the title track of Dil Se. The stadium had come alive.
The crowd kept swelling till late in the night as Rahman said: Kolkata. You are unbelievable. I couldnt believe you would be able to come amidst the rain and give us all the love. Enjoy the show!
The VIP seats were packed and by the time Rahman finished two songs, the audience had doubled in number.
In a jacket, with tiny bulbs (the one sported by Amitabh Bachchan in Yaarana),he even had the media personnel on their feet.
The king of music delivered on his promise of the night to be an amalgamation of music and technology with the use of techno sound, lights, laser pyrotechnique and a bunch of talented performers.
Rahman and his team then performed hits from Taal,Guru,Dil Se,Jodha Akbar and Swades, and his fingers created magic on the keyboard much to the delight of the audiences.
The stadium nearly exploded with cheers when Rahman said: I will try something I have never done before. I will sing a song in Bengali.
Kolkatans had probably never heard Chitto jetha bhoi shunno… the way they did on Tuesday night.
As Rahman and his team continued with songs punched with Tamil words, even the security persons were tapping their feet.
A string of sufi songs heightened with Khwaja mere Khwaja sung by Rahman was a treat to the senses.
Towards the end,Rahman and team sang a medley starting with Mustafa Muatafa replacing Mustafa with Kolkata.
The electric night had a fitting end with Sukhwinders Chhaiya Chhaiya.
