Visva-Bharati University Vice-Chancellor Rajat Kanta Ray met Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi on Wednesday seeking an investigation into the corruption charges levelled against him and others.

Ray was in Kolkata to attend an executive council meeting on Thursday.

“I have come to report the latest happenings in the University to the Governor.

I told him that an investigation into the alleged charges that have surfaced, including those against me,may solve the problems,” said Ray,after his meeting with the Governor. Ray,however, refused to say anything on the Governor’s reaction.

Meanwhile, the protesters, including the teaching and non-teaching staff as well as the students, staged a day-long sit-in at Chatimtala today.

“We have heard that the V-C has refused to step down from his post but we feel that unless he steps down, the investigation into the allegations will be jeopardised.

He should go on a leave for the probe to be conducted in an objective manner,” said Gagan Sarkar,a member of the Karmachari Sabha.

The protesters maintained that essential services in the university have not been disrupted.

“We have asked the staff of hospitals, girls’ hostel, ambulances, electric supply and services as well as the security staff to stay out of the protest,” said Sarkar.
