Prison break attempt at Hooghly? Bombs hurled at police,1 hurt

A gang of miscreants fired bullets and hurled bombs at policemen in front of Hooghly district jail on Tuesday evening creating panic among the locals.

A gang of miscreants fired bullets and hurled bombs at policemen in front of Hooghly district jail on Tuesday evening creating panic among the locals.

A policeman,Biswajit Das,who sustained bullet injury,was rushed to Imambara Sadar Hospital. Three of the miscreants have been arrested. The Tata Sumo cars in which they were travelling have been seized. According to sources,about 30 miscreants,armed with sophisticated firearms and bombs,arrived on three Tata Sumo vehicles around 5 pm and asked some local traders to shut down their shops. At that time,a police team was patrolling the area. After finding Tata Sumos parked in front of the jail’s gate,the police patrol team reached the spot. On seeing the police approaching,the miscreants hurled bombs and fired at them. Police chased them and managed to catch three.

Police are inquiring whether the miscreants had come their to storm the jail to free their associates. “Leads suggestthat the miscreants had come from Bandel. Raids are on,” a police officer said.
