The centrally located Ram Lila Maidan in Purulia town, where Home Minister Rajnath Singh recently addressed a public meeting, is close to the Marwari-dominated business district of the town. Drawing from this factor, BJP candidate from Purulia town, Nagendranath Ojha, a businessman, hopes to garner enough support to win his first-ever election. “We have full faith that the 20 per cent Marwari population here will vote for us,” says the 33-year-old.

BJP has fielded candidates from all the 9 constituencies in district. “Modiji has a large fan following. We are confident that BJP will make more than a mark in Bengal this time,” said Ojha.

In 2011, the seat was won by TMC’s Kamakshya Prasad Singh Deo. CPM’s Koushik Mazumdar was runners up with BJP’s Panchkari Mukherjee coming a distant third. Ojha too has strong opponents in TMC’s Debojyoti Prasad Singh Deo and Congress’s Sudip Kumar Mukhopadhyay. “In 2014 municipal elections, our candidate was a close second. In 2011, we didn’t have Modiji at the forefront. This year we have him backing us,” said Ojha.
