In 1984,a group of IIT Delhi alumni, bored of their mundane routine, decided to bring in a little bit of passion into their lives. They formed a theatre group and called themselves Dramatech. Twenty seven years and 35 plays later, the Delhi-based theatre group is all set to go on stage with the production Sab Thaat Para Reh Jaayega,at Kamani auditorium today.

The story is a comedy that aims to “celebrate the little joys of life”. Welcome to the crazy world of the Mehtas and Singhaniyas: two families, poles apart,in ideology and manners. When Ashutosh, the attractive son of the Singhaniyas, falls in love with Vinnie Mehta, the two families are forced to meet. Things don’t go as planned and all hell breaks loose.

The play is a Hindi adaptation of an old American play,You Can’t Take it With You,by George S Kauffmana and Moss Hart. To direct and adapt it,Dramatech has brought in guest director Ranjit Kapoor. At 63,Kapoor has decided to return to theatre. An alumnus of National School of Drama,he spent the last 20 years writing for Bollywood, including penning scripts for Chintuji,Halla Bol,Legend of Bhagat Singh and Kya Kehna. “I’m back to theatre in the true sense,” he says. Talking about adapting the American play to the Indian context,Kapoor explains,“Its ethos is very close to Indian philosophy. The title comes from the famous nazm (poem) Banjara-Nama by the 19th century poet,Nazir Akbarabadi.”

The play will be staged at Kamani Auditorium on October 1 and 2. Contact: 9910030256
