Panel: Free all political prisoners

The Political Prisoners Release Committee set up by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today recommended the release of all 78 political prisoners lodged in various jails in the state.

The 11-member committee headed by Justice (retd) Moloy Sengupta of Calcutta High Court also recommended that all the charges against 77 people of Singur against whom magisterial inquiries were going on be dropped.

Among the 78,about 33-34 people were involved in crimes related to Left-wing extremism,according to Rajdeep Majumder,a member of the committee.

“We are also sending teams to jails at Darjeeling,Jalpaiguri,Burdwan,Bankura etc to study the cases of various prisoners,’’ according to Justice Sengupta.
