No let-up in attacks during nomination

Reports of violence during filing of nomination continued to reach the State Election Commission from various districts through the day.

Midnapore (West)

n CPM candidate Nirmala Dhara at Akoppur village in Ghatal was beaten up at her residence after she filed her nomination.

n Ashtom Hazra,father of CPM candidate Mousumi Hazra,was beaten up at Jadupur village in Ghatal. He is in hospital.

n CPM candidate Ajay Pandit was abducted by alleged TMC supporters at Saipur in Danton II and ‘fined’ Rs 5 lakh. He was also beaten up and threatened of dire consequences if he did not withdraw his nomination.

n Bombs were hurled at CPM candidate Kalyani Bag’s residence at Chandrakona Town in Prasadpur. She too has been asked to withdraw nomination.

n Three CPM candidates of Dhaneshpur village at Tingla were stopped while they were on their way to submit nominations. They were beaten up and their nomination papers were torn.

Cooch Behar

n Manick Ray,a businessman and brother of Nantu Ray,an active TMC supporter was shot dead late Friday night near his residence at Pasharihat,Cooch Behar. His body was carried to the local police station first and then to the hospital where he was declared brought dead.

South 24-Parganas

n RSP candidate Arun Biswas and his wife Madhumita Biswas along with their three-month-old child had been driven out of their home following violence allegedly by TMC supporters.

n Miscreants hurled bombs at RSP candidate Deepali Sardar’s house.

n CPI leader Kalipada Maikap was attacked at Bhangore and is in hospital. Police inaction has also been alleged in this case.

Purulia: Explosion outside TMC leader’s house

A bomb planted in front of the residence of a senior Trinamool leader of Purulia district went off in the wee hours Saturday. The front portion of the house of Aditya Singh Malla,general secretary of TMC in the district,was blown up.

Aditya’s wife Sushmita Singh Malla is the general secretary of the party’s women’s wing in the district while his nephew Chandan Singh Malla is the block president of TMC. The family is known as the most influential TMC family in the area. Sources said the family received a letter on May 7 with the letterhead of the Indian People Liberation Army,a Naxalite group operating in Jharkhand. The letter threatened the family of dire consequences if the three of them did not quit the party within seven days.

MLA Santiram Mahato said,“This is a conspiracy by the CPM and Maoists,who have joined hands prior to the rural polls.”
