As President Pranab Mukherjee rose to award the Jagadish Chandra Bose Memorial Gold Medal to 23-year-old Pratish Dutta on Saturday, eveyone seated at the Kharagpur auditorium knew it was the highlight of the convocation. For Pratish was born blind. However,it did not deter him from completing his MSC in Mathematics from IIT- Kharagpur and that too with an amazing academic performance.

Born in Batanagar in north Kolkata,Pratish does all mathematical calculation in his brain and he can tell in a second the formula of any equation.

Pratish suffers from retinal skesis,a disease which causes blindness, and from his childhood he was dependable on his mother for every thing. “If I studied 10 hours a day,my mother used to study 15 hours for me as she is instrumental in helping me understand the subjects since I could not read,” said a jubilant Pratish who thanked his mother after receiving the award.

An exceptionally brilliant student,Pratish wants to do Phd in Cryptology and Network Security from IIT itself. His father, who is a civil engineer, also played a pivotal role in shaping his career. “My father always told me to give my best effort and I followed his words. At last,I have succeeded,” added Pratish.
