Media also gets warning under ‘Info Act’

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday again slammed the media, especially the electronic media, for “distorting facts” and threatened to rein in the channels.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday again slammed the media, especially the electronic media, for “distorting facts” and threatened to rein in the channels.

“It is my greatness that I allow the media to come here (Writers’ Buildings) and allow them to function but during the CPM rule they did not allow their adversaries to speak. If you go on distorting news like this,I will be compelled to invoke the provision of the Information Act,’’ Mamata told mediapersons.

While it was not clear which Act she was referring to,she might have talked about the Information Technology Act,2000 which has provisions for government control in the dissemination of information in the electronic media.

Even officials of the State Information and Cultural Affairs Department were not clear about which Act she was referring to. “We will have to discuss what she meant,’’ a senior official of the department told The Indian Express.

Law Minister Moloy Ghatak too was in the dark about the legal provisions. “The CM has not discussed anything with me,so I will not be able to say which Act she was referring to,’’ Ghatak told The Indian Express.
