A film explores the ganja culture and infrastructure of the city

As J. M. Campbell,a gazetteer to the Bombay presidency in the British India of the late 19th century said,it’s the joy-giver,the sky-flier,the heavenly-guide,the poor man’s heaven, the soother of grief. Ganja or marijuana is much more than an intoxicant to most Indians; it’s a way of life. Anirban Datta,a Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) graduate, talks about that very fact in his short film,Ganja in India.

“From Ayurvedic resorts of Kerala to the tuk-tuk wallas in Mysore, marijuana is freely available in most places in India . It’s consumed freely in the country and foreigners seem to find that unbelievable,” says Datta. Ganja in India, was made for the Dutch TV channel,Metropolis, which aimed to explore the world’s drugs culture and infrastructure.

The five-minute film follows a group of ganja-revlers in Kolkata,as they try out different marijuana innovations such as bhaang with rose syrup. “Kolkata has a very active ganja culture. Most youngsters of the city have been a part of it at one time or the other,” says Datta. The film also tries to capture the bohemian spirit of the city. Kolkata is a liberal, progressive and surreal metropolis. I wanted to portray the way ganja acts as the great leveler. There is this element of tranquility and higher consciousness amongst the marijuana smokers, despite their diverse social backgrounds,” says Datta.
