A day after she broke with tradition when she took charge as the Railways Minister in Kolkata,Mamata Banerjee today left for New Delhi to attend the swearing-in ceremony for ministers on Thursday and said she would highlight the plight of the state in the wake of cyclone Aila during her sojourn in the national capital.
I spoke to the Prime Minister on phone when he called me up,asking me to attend the swearing-in ceremony. I will take up the post-cyclone situation in the state with the Centre when Im there, she told reporters outside her residence at Kalighat.
On Thursday, six Trinamool MPs Saugata Ray,Dinesh Trivedi,Sisir Adhikari,Sultan Ahmed,Mukul Roy and Chandra Mohan Jatua will take oath as ministers of state in the new Congress-led government at the Centre. Their portfolios are, however, yet to be announced.
Banerjee said all her MPs,including the ministers, would return to their respective constituencies to help put life back on track. In all,13 districts have been hit by the cyclone over the past 48 hours.
Where is the state government? Where is their disaster management machinery? Thousands of people are in need of essentials like medicines, drinking water, baby food. River water has mixed with drinking water. There is a huge possibility of outbreak of enteric diseases. For three days, many people in the city are without electricity and water supply. Fallen trees are yet to be cleared. All efforts till now have been made by the Centres disaster management set-up, Banerjee said.
Stating she was not in favour of a special aid package for Bengal,Banerjee said the need was for a special Master Plan instead. It will be a mistake to hand over funds to this (Left Front) government. They will digest it all. Very little will reach the people. If monetary aid is to be given,it should go straight to the gram panchayats. All GPs led by our party are totally involved in the relief and rescue efforts.
