Mamata plans session to train partymen on KMC needs

Trinamool Congress chief and Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee is all set to hold a state-level conference at Salt Lake on June 25 in a bid to draw a road map for her newly elected municipal councillors.

Trinamool Congress chief and Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee is all set to hold a state-level conference at Salt Lake on June 25 in a bid to draw a road map for her newly elected municipal councillors.

Trinamool sources said the party chief is particular about good governance in the municipal bodies won by her party.

Banerjee has also roped in ex-Kolkata mayor Subrata Mukherjee for the purpose. “Most of the newly elected councillors have no experience in dealing with government work,so we have to train them,” said Mukherjee, adding the conference is likely to be attended by 1,000-odd elected people from across the state.

With an eye on the 2011 Assembly polls and well aware that 75 of the 294 Assembly seats in the state fall in urban areas,Banerjee is expected to reveal her plans for urban development. “We have opposed the idea of imposition of

service charge on water supply in the run up to the civic election. Now,it would be difficult for us if we do not withdraw such taxes imposed earlier by CPM-run municipalities,” said a senior leader of the party. Trinamool leader Sougata Roy,who is the minister of state for the union urban development ministry, may be pushed to change a few guidelines of some JNNURM projects.

“Mamata has asked Roy to clarify the guidelines of the JNNURM projects at the conference. We hope the ministry of urban development will be able to change the guidelines and strictures,” said the leader.
