Renowned Bengali litterateur Mallika Sengupta, known for her unapologetically political poetry, passed away on Saturday at the age of 51. She was suffering from breast cancer since 2005. She is survived by her son and her husband poet Subodh Sarkar. English translations of her work have appeared in various Indian and American anthologies. In addition to teaching, editing and writing, she has been actively involved with the cause of gender justice and other social issues. Her poetry often dealt with the marginalised role of women in history,as in her celebrated work Khona which was about a medieval female poet whose tongue was cut of by her jealous husband.
