Make engg curriculum job-oriented: Partha

State Commerce and Industry Minister Partha Chatterjee on Wednesday said the engineering curriculum should be revamped and made industry oriented to make engineering graduates in the state employable.

Recent surveys have pointed that 75 per cent of the professionals produced by the state do not match the industry demand,Chatterjee said. “The quality of education in our state is not on a par with others. We should not start colleges for the sake of starting but should ensure quality output. Most of our students passing out from engineering colleges are not industry ready. To fix this,we need to have a curriculum which suites the industry. We need to revamp our engineering curriculum altogether,” Chatterjee said at a symposium organised by CII at Jadavpur University.

He said the government was already working on revamping higher education and charting ways to depoliticise it. “We will take up this issue of curriculum revision seriously and will talk to the Chancellor about it,” he said.

“From now on,we have decided that whenever we sign an agreement with any industry, the government will put in a clause where they would have to tell us what kind of manpower they require,” he said. ENS
