A 50-year-old woman hanged herself from a trident light post in broad daylight in front of Mahajati Sadan even as thousands of people remained mute spectators.

A 50-year-old woman hanged herself from a trident light post in broad daylight in front of Mahajati Sadan even as thousands of people remained mute spectators. Soma Bakshi,according to the police,had a fight with her husband after which she ran out of her shanty and hanged herself using her dupatta.

The incident took place around 4 pm at one of the busiest places in the city,which,significantly,remains highly crowded in the afternoon because of its proximity to College Street and the Calcutta Medical college.

Hundreds of hawkers,shopowners and pedestrians were present but nobody came forward to stop the woman who tied one end of her dupatta with the lower arm of the trident and strangulated herself with the other end.

Somas husband,Dipankar Bakshi,a pavement dweller,told the police they had a fight over certain issues after which she ran out of the shanty and hanged herself.

The locals informed the police after seeing her lifeless body hanging from the post. The police rushed her to the Calcutta Medical College where she was declared brought dead.

Her body has been sent for an autopsy. We have detained her husband for interrogation. We have yet to find any sign of foul play. There,however,are apparent signs of suicide. We are investigating into the matter, a senior police official said.
