A couple died under mysterious circumstances Saturday evening at a lodge in Naihati, said police who are prima facie treating the case as that of a murder-suicide.
The 42-year-old man and his 36-year-old woman partner, both residents of Sonarpur who police believe were involved in an extra-marital affair, had checked into the hotel on fake identity cards, a senior police officer said.
“It appears that the two had an argument and the man stabbed her with a knife. He appears to have later jumped off the second floor from the balcony in the room,” said the officer.
Hotel staff rushed to the room to find the woman lying in a pool of blood. “She suffered multiple stab injuries… the knife found in the room was used in the murder,” added the officer.
A police team led by Barrackpore Police Commissioner Niraj Kumar Singh is investigating the matter. The police are now working to establish whether the man was carrying the knife when the two had checked in, to ascertain if the crime was premeditated.
