Landing in trouble
The nightmare of Land Reforms minister Abdur Rezaq Mollah seems to have come true. He is finally at loggerheads with his principal secretary Sabyasachi Sen. The bone of contention is the plot near Eastern Bypass given to Refugee Relief & Rehabilitation (RR&R) department. While Mollah wants the land back,Sen is batting for the refugees. Grapevine has it that Mollah has the support of the entire land department. But Sen has the full support of Urban Development Minister Ashok Bhattacharya. Last week,Bhattacharya crossed swords with Mollah over some 100 acres given to KMDA,for which Mollah now wants a detailed account. Mollah was apprehensive of a collision with Sen,when the former principal secretary of Commerce and Industries Department was transferred to his office. It remains to be seen whether he now asks the chief minister to intervene.
Cellphone blues
Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee appeared quite upset over the way DGP Bhupinder Singh was censured in the assembly for taking pictures of the House, which was in session. And though nobody in the Home Department headed by the chief minister wanted to question the power and authority of the Speaker, most employees felt dejected over the DGPs fate, fearing that this would affect the morale of the police force in general.
Graphic evidence?
Immediately after DGP Bhupinder Singh was censured by the Speaker Hasim Abdul Halim,CPM legislators were at sea trying to figure out a reason why the DGP took a picture despite knowing the rules. Finally one said: He will retire next month. I think he wanted to show the picture to his family.
Door closed
Brazilian World Cup winner Romario had an excellent time in Kolkata during his three-day visit to take part in a football reality show for a newly-launched Bengali television channel. His most important wish, however, remained unfulfilled.
The former Brazilian soccer star, who took the 1994 World Cup in the US by storm,is a huge admirer of Mother Teresa and wanted to visit the Mother House. But the powers that be did not give permission for the visit, citing security reasons. Romario left the city dejected.
